Project Outcomes
The project began by identifying 37 MPs to be involved in the national campaign against malaria and bringing these members together in the ‘Tanzania Members of Parliament Coalition against Malaria’ (TAPAMA). This was intended as a space for learning and sharing of ideas, similar to that of the APPMG in the UK. Some MPs within this group were particularly proactive and carried out some preliminary community sensitisation. The media also swiftly became involved in ORES advocacy efforts. The second month of the project saw ORES conducting a workshop for the MPs and four major media organisations, thereby meeting objective 1.
ORES also conducted numerous individual meetings with MPs for specific zones, using them as opportunities to begin to equip the Parliamentarians with IEC materials and involve them in RBM Advocacy. The Tanzania Members of Parliament Coalition against Malaria was registered formally as an NGO in Tanzania and as a coalition dedicated to Roll Back Malaria (RBM). It has subsequently become heavily involved in the distribution of nets and educational materials. MPs continued to be involved in advocacy and Campaigns over World Malaria Day in April 2009, including an exhibition, and helped with the formation of four cultural groups which were then effective tools for the distribution of advocacy materials to communities.
The Project therefore achieved the following results:
| - | Scaling up Awareness: The project has seen increased awareness and commitment from over 240 political and Government decision makers through its workshop. The 37 members of Parliament that were specifically trained have now become “Agents of Change” in their communities and leaders of their peers in involving others in the coalition. | |
| - | A major achievement and outcome of the Project has been the formation of a coalition of Tanzania Parliamentarians Against Malaria (TAPAMA). This is the first coalition of its kind in Tanzania. This alliance has enhanced advocacy on role the of leaders and other decision makers the on implementation of United Nations malaria related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as Rolling Back Malaria and National implementation of ant malarial Prevention and treatment policy of Tanzania. The coalition was visited by members of the European Parliamentary Forum (EPF) in November 2008 who promised to support them in the implementation of RBM as well support to other MPs Coalitions in Sub Saharan Africa. |
| - | Resource mobilisation: The Project has been able to mobilise 4000 treated Mosquito Nets and member of Parliaments were able to distribute these Mosquito nets to the most vulnerable children and other children under five in their respective communities. | ![]() |
