Project Outcomes
A malaria situation analysis of Burkina Faso was carried out which included mapping of the various partners and organisations working on malaria issues.
Information and awareness raising meetings were held for social partners and interested actors on the fight against malaria in the country
Advocacy was undertaken towards key actors regarding the problem of Malaria
SOS/JD held a coalition-building workshop on malaria advocacy with key civil society actors, in order to increase their capacity.
The group brought together various partners to adopt a civil society charter on the fight against malaria in Burkina Faso. This charter was drawn up in consultation with key actors in the seven most affected regions of the country. It will not only engage new civil society organisations, authorities and development partners that work with the Ministry of Health but it will also stand as a reminder of the commitments made in the Declaration of Abuja.
They also created an advocacy work plan for the fight against Malaria
The group participated in world malaria day activities particularly through public awareness raising meetings.
The Burkinabe Coalition Against Malaria was officially launched.
The implementation of these activities resulted in the establishment of meaningful dialogue and interface between civil society and decision-makers in Burkina Faso and brought international commitments on malaria once again to the attention of the government. Activities allowed for discussion of the mechanisms for advocating on the malaria problem in Burkina Faso and the need for the largest possible civil society partnership, which would be dedicated to including and disseminating malaria-related messages in their public health work. This is especially in regard to the issues of malaria relating to pregnant women and children under 5 years. The launch of an official coalition has made malaria-related advocacy sustainable in that there is a body set up to coordinate such activities beyond GSK funding. It now has a functioning Secretariat and is conducting monitoring and evaluation of its project.
