BURKINA FASO
About the project
This project aims to create a partnership between decision makers and key actors within civil society to accelerate the implementation of key commitments made in the fight against malaria. Until now, the problem of malaria in Burkina Faso has not attracted much financial backing or many resources, particularly at a local level. This project aims, therefore, to create a strong coalition of national organisations in the fight against malaria.
About the organisation
This project will be carried out by a consortium of two civil society organisations from Burkina Faso, L'Association SOS/ Jeunesse et Défis (SOS/JD) and La Convention pour la Culture de la Paix (CCP). These organisations have a long history of collaboration in the area of information/ education/ advocacy. Since 2004, they have succcessfully driven advocacy campaigns together in the fight against malaria, specifically in the surrounding areas of Ouagadougou.
Background to the project
In Burkina Faso, malaria is a major public health problem. Endemic throughout the country, particularly severe epidemics occur between May and October. According to national health statistics, malaria is responsible for 40.83% of all hospitalisations and 37.5% of all deaths. Children under five remain the most vulnerable : malaria is the cause of 54.29% of deaths in this age group. Pregnant women are also highly vulnerable.
Aims of the project
This project aims to establish a charter, which will be drawn up through consultations with key actors in the fight against malaria in the seven most affected regions of the country. This aim of the charter - the first of its kind - is twofold. On one hand, it aims to engage civil society, the authorities and development partners in working together with the Ministry of Health in the fight against malaria. On the other, it recalls to public decision makers the commitments made in the Declaration of Abuja. Ultimately, it aims to establish a national coalition in Burkina Faso in the fight against malaria.
