In Burkina Faso malaria is a major public health problem.  Endemic throughout the country, particularly severe epidemics occur between May and October.  According to national health statistics malaria is responsible for an estimated 41% of all hospitalisations and 38% of all deaths.  Children under five remain the most vulnerable: malaria is the cause of approximately 55% of deaths in this age group.  Pregnant women are also highly vulnerable.
